The Beating Heart
of Social Enterprise

Virtual Summit
Friday 12 November 2021

Social Enterprise is not new in Northern Australia. It has always been here, led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. As a result, it is more than just a business model. It’s a way of life, it’s our community, it’s in our hearts.

Impact North, QSEC, SENT, ILSC and Social Traders invite you to slow down, listen and learn from the heart of Northern Australia.

What to expect on the day:

We’re using the spatial.chat in this year’s event. The platform will blow your mind! You can move between rooms, tap people you know on the shoulder, and even have actual 1:1 conversations with the person 'sitting' next to you. It's crazy, it's liberating, and we can't wait to connect with you all there.

11:15am - 12:15pm (ACST)
Main Stage: Funding the Revolution

Mining and agriculture are traditionally seen as extractive industries, but in the hands of local communities they can have enormous benefits. Learn from two inspiring enterprises - Gulkula in Nhulunbuy who have taken over the operation of a mine in the community previously run by Rio Tinto, and Mayiharvests, founding member of the Northern Australia Aboriginal Kakadu Plum Alliance (NAAKPA), who sought funding for an innovative collaboration to ensure that the community can receive the maximum benefit from the growth of the bush foods industry.

This session is hosted by the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation and will include discussions with Pat Torres from Mayi Harvests and Tracy Menon and Daryl Lacey from Gulkula Mining. The ILSC supports remote Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander communities by funding their economic opportunity.
